How a Dental Bridge Replaces a Missing Tooth

A missing tooth is more than a cosmetic gap. A dental bridge is a time‑tested way to fill that space and keep your bite working properly.

What a Bridge Is

A bridge literally bridges the gap left by one or more missing teeth. It consists of a replacement tooth, called a pontic, anchored on either side by crowns placed on the neighboring teeth or on implants.

Once in place, the bridge fills the space so you can bite, chew, and smile as usual. Because it is custom‑made and shaded to match, it blends naturally with the teeth around it.

Why Closing the Gap Matters

When a tooth is missing, the neighboring teeth can gradually drift into the space, and the opposing tooth may shift as well. Over time this can affect your bite and make cleaning harder.

Filling the gap helps keep your other teeth in their proper positions and restores even chewing. It also supports your facial appearance and helps you speak clearly.

Is a Bridge Right for You

Bridges work well for many people with one or a few missing teeth in a row, provided the surrounding teeth or supports are healthy. A thorough exam tells us whether a bridge is a good fit.

At our Vancouver clinic we walk you through your options so you can weigh a bridge against other tooth‑replacement choices with clear information.
