Not all cracks are equal, and neither are their treatments. The right fix depends on how deep the crack goes and which part of the tooth is affected.
Minor Cracks and Chips
Small surface cracks and minor chips that do not reach into the sensitive inner tooth can often be smoothed or repaired with tooth‑colored bonding or a filling. These fixes are quick and conservative.
In some cases, very fine surface lines cause no problems at all and simply need monitoring. Your dentist will let you know when a crack is cosmetic versus something to address.
Deeper Cracks
When a crack is larger or affects a tooth that takes heavy chewing force, a crown is often the answer. By covering and holding the tooth together, a crown protects it from the crack spreading further.
If a crack reaches the inner pulp of the tooth, additional treatment such as a root canal may be needed before the tooth is crowned. This can save a tooth that might otherwise be lost.
