Wisdom Tooth Recovery Made Simple: A Day-by-Day Guide

Recovering from wisdom tooth removal is usually straightforward when you know what to do. A few simple habits in the first several days make all the difference to healing comfortably.

The First 24 Hours

Right after the procedure, gentle pressure from biting on gauze helps a protective blood clot form over the site. Rest, keep your head slightly raised, and use a cold compress on your cheek to ease swelling.

This first day is not the time for straws, spitting, or rinsing vigorously, since that can dislodge the clot. Sticking to cool, soft foods and taking it easy sets recovery off on the right foot.

The Next Few Days

Swelling often peaks around day two or three and then steadily improves. Gentle warm salt‑water rinses after meals help keep the area clean once the first day has passed.

Keep eating soft foods and chewing away from the site, and continue brushing your other teeth carefully. Any post‑op tenderness usually fades a little more each day.

What to Avoid and When to Call

Skip smoking, straws, and hard or crunchy foods while you heal, since these can disturb the site or lead to a painful dry socket. Rest rather than pushing into heavy activity too soon.

Call Cambie Dental if pain suddenly worsens after a few days, if swelling grows instead of shrinking, or if you notice a fever. Our Vancouver team would always rather check than have you worry at home.
