Recovering from a tooth extraction — what actually helps

Most extractions heal without issue when aftercare is followed carefully. The first 24 hours matter most, and a few smart habits for the week after make all the difference.

The first 24 hours

Keep the gauze in place for the recommended time. Apply ice to your cheek in 20-minute intervals to reduce swelling. Avoid hot foods, straws, spitting, and smoking — all of which can dislodge the clot that is protecting the socket.

Eating and drinking

Soft foods help — yogurt, soups, eggs, smoothies. Chew on the opposite side for several days. Stay hydrated but drink from a cup, not a straw.

Gentle warm salt water rinses twice daily starting 24 hours after the procedure keep the socket clean without disturbing healing.

When to call us

Call if pain worsens after day three, if bleeding persists, or if you develop fever. Most cases resolve cleanly with basic care, but we would rather you check in than worry at home.
