Tooth Extraction Aftercare: Simple Steps to Heal Well

Healing well after a tooth extraction is mostly about a few simple habits in the first several days. Protecting the socket early lets your body do the rest comfortably.

Protecting the Clot

After an extraction, a blood clot forms in the socket and acts as the starting point for healing. Keeping that clot in place is the single most important thing you can do in the first day.

That means no straws, no vigorous spitting or rinsing, and no smoking for the first day, since these can dislodge the clot. Losing it too early can lead to a painful condition called dry socket.

Easing Discomfort and Swelling

Some tenderness and mild swelling in the first few days are completely normal and settle steadily. A cold compress on your cheek and over‑the‑counter pain relief, if you need it, keep things comfortable.

Rest for the first day and keep your head slightly raised to help with swelling. Stick to cool, soft foods and chew away from the site while the area is fresh.

Keeping Clean and Knowing When to Call

After the first day, gentle warm salt‑water rinses help keep the socket clean, and you can carefully brush the rest of your teeth as usual. Good hygiene supports steady, healthy healing.

Call Cambie Dental if pain sharply worsens after a couple of days, if swelling grows, or if bleeding does not settle. Our Vancouver team is always glad to check in and put your mind at ease.
