Making your child's first visit a good one

Making your child's first visit a good one

The Canadian Dental Association recommends a child's first visit by their first birthday, or within six months of their first tooth. Early visits build familiarity long before anything complicated is needed.

Before the appointment

Talk about the visit positively at home. Avoid phrases like ``it will not hurt'' that suggest hurt is expected. Read a picture book about visiting the dentist.

Schedule the appointment for a time when your child is typically rested and fed — not right after a nap or hungry.

What to bring

A favorite toy, stuffed animal, or book can help a nervous child feel secure. One parent or guardian is welcome in the operatory with your child.

What the visit actually looks like

At Cambie Dental, the first visit is mostly about getting comfortable — a ride in the chair, a look around, a gentle count of teeth if they will let us.

The goal is not a full exam on day one. It is building trust so every future visit is easier than the last.
